In a competitive restaurant landscape, standing out requires more than great food—it takes a clear vision and a memorable experience. Chef Juan Placencia, celebrated for his Montclair, NJ, restaurant, set out to share a broader story of Latin American culture, flavor, and hospitality.

P&H helped Juan identify and articulate a concept that captured both his culinary roots and the communal vibrancy of Latin America. Inspired by village plazas—places of gathering, food, and connection—Somos (“we are”) was envisioned as more than a restaurant: a place to belong.

Opening in 2019 to widespread acclaim, Somos became a vibrant destination for both loyal guests and new audiences. Though it closed during the pandemic, its concept evolved into Brazas BBQ in Philadelphia, where its spirit continues to thrive.
